Wayne Shorter (1933–2023) was a visionary American jazz saxophonist and composer whose career spanned over six decades. He played pivotal roles in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet, and co-founded the fusion group Weather Report. Shorter’s compositions, including “Footprints,” “Speak No Evil,” “Infant Eyes,” “Nefertiti,” and “Witch Hunt,” are considered modern jazz standards. His innovative approach to harmony and form earned him 12 Grammy Awards and a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Grammy.
