Good Morning, School Girl is a blues standard first recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson I in 1937. He cut the uptempo track in Aurora, Illinois for Bluebird Records, released as a single with Sugar Mama Blues on the B-side. The song features Williamson on vocals and harmonica with Big Joe Williams and Robert Lee McCoy on guitars, and its melody traces back to Son Bonds’ 1934 Back and Side Blues, reflecting Williamson’s West Tennessee roots as well as pre-war Chicago blues. Over the years it has been widely covered under the title Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, with notable versions by Don and Bob in 1961 and the Yardbirds in 1964, the latter helping introduce the tune to a rock audience and appearing on the 1965 US album For Your Love. The tune has since appeared on various albums including Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells (1965) and continues to be performed by artists across blues, rock and R&B. In 1990 the song was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame as a classic blues recording.
